Dangers of Ortho Evra

McNeil Pharmaceuticals recently discovered the birth control patch, Ortho Evra®, can deliver up to twice theestrogen hormone as the birth control pill. According to doctors, increased levels of estrogen increase the risk for blood clots, which can result in heart attacks and strokes. Doctors are asking patients nationwide to reconsider their birth control options.
Most birth control methods that rely on hormone delivery carry some level of risk. This relatively new product may be more dangerous that other forms of birth control on the market. Patients have started recieving contacts from their doctors about these potential risks, and may begin being asked to reconsider their birth control options.
According to the FDA:
FDA notified healthcare professionals and patients of revisions to the label for Ortho Evra®, a skin patch approved for birth control, that includes a bolded warning about higher exposure to estrogen for women using the weekly patch compared to taking a daily birth control pill containing 35 micrograms of estrogen. A woman on Ortho Evra® may be exposed to approximately 60 percent more estrogen than if she were taking a typical 35 microgram estrogen birth control pill. Estrogen use is linked to blood clots in the legs and lungs and other clotting problems such as strokes and heart attacks. It is not known if women using Ortho Evra® have a higher risk of serious side effects than women taking the typical 35 microgram estrogen pills.
According to doctors, if you are using the Ortho Evra® patch and want to switch, do not remove the patch until you ahve another form of birth control to replace it. You should consult with you physician regarding your own personal situation.
